Seeking Justice for the Reavey Brothers: A Family’s 50-Year Fight
Phoenix Law is proud to represent Eugene Reavey in his ongoing civil action before the Belfast High Court arising from the murders of his brothers John Martin, Brian, and Anthony Reavey on 4 January 1976 – one of the most painful and enduring stories of injustice from the legacy of the Troubles. Our Gavin Booth, Darragh Mackin and Diarmuid Brecknell are instructed on behalf of Mr Reavey alongside Counsel team Des Fahy KC and Conleth Rooney BL.
As top Belfast solicitors with deep expertise in legacy litigation, we are committed to pursuing accountability where state institutions have failed to deliver it, and to ensuring that families like the Reaveys receive the truth and justice they deserve. This is the first ever Collusion Civil Action to be heard before the Belfast High Court.
The Murder of the Reavey Brothers
On the evening of 4 January 1976, gunmen from the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) attacked the Reavey family home in Whitecross, South Armagh. John Martin, Brian, and Anthony Reavey were shot in a calculated sectarian attack. All three brothers died as a result of their injuries. John Martin and Brian died that night; Anthony, the youngest, lingered for several weeks before succumbing to his wounds on 28 February 1976.
The murders were part of a wave of sectarian violence that engulfed Northern Ireland in those days — the same evening, the O’Dowd family in Gilford suffered a near-identical attack. The following day, the Kingsmill massacre claimed the lives of ten Protestant workmen. The Reavey family, however, faced not only grief but a profound additional injustice: in the immediate aftermath, Eugene Reavey was wrongly and publicly linked by senior RUC officers to the Kingsmill atrocity — an allegation that was wholly without foundation and caused him and his family immeasurable additional suffering over many decades.
Eugene Reavey has consistently and courageously spoken out, demanding that the truth about his brothers’ murders and the role played by elements within the state be brought fully into the open.
The Case for Civil Action
Despite decades of campaigns, inquests, and investigations, the full truth behind the Reavey murders including credible allegations of collusion between loyalist paramilitaries and members of the security forces has never been established through any formal accountability process to the satisfaction of the family.
The Historical Enquiries Team (HET) and successive Police Ombudsman investigations examined aspects of the case, but Eugene Reavey and his legal team believe that critical questions remain unanswered. The ongoing civil action before Belfast High Court represents the family’s determination to use every available legal avenue to compel disclosure, establish the facts, and secure a measure of justice that has been denied for nearly fifty years.
This civil action sits at the forefront of legacy litigation in Northern Ireland — testing the courts’ willingness to hold the state accountable for historic wrongs committed or facilitated during the Troubles.
Legacy Litigation: Why It Matters
Legacy litigation in Northern Ireland occupies a uniquely complex legal and political landscape. The passage of the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act 2023 and the ongoing legal challenges to its provisions has fundamentally altered the framework within which families can pursue justice. Many families fear that avenues for civil redress are being progressively narrowed.
This is the first ever Collusion Civil Action to be heard before the Belfast High Court.
The Reavey civil action is therefore of landmark significance not only for Eugene and his family, but for every Troubles-bereaved family that continues to seek truth and accountability through the courts.
As experienced litigation solicitors in Belfast, Phoenix Law has navigated this evolving legal landscape on behalf of numerous families and individuals affected by the legacy of the Troubles. We understand both the legal complexity and the profound human dimension of this work. We are acutely aware that for families like the Reaveys, this is not abstract litigation — it is the pursuit of a truth that has been withheld from them for a lifetime.
