Defamation proceedings have commenced in the Dublin High Court for the punk-rap band Bob Vylan. Both members of British punk-rap duo Bob Vylan have issued separate High Court proceedings against the BBC in Ireland. Frontman Pascal Robinson-Foster and bandmate Laurence George Wade filed their claims individually this week. Both men are represented by Belfast solicitor Darragh Mackin of Phoenix Law, whose defamation solicitors have acted in a number of high-profile media law and civil liberties matters in recent years.
The Glastonbury Broadcast
The proceedings follow Bob Vylan’s performance at Glastonbury Festival last summer, during which Robinson-Foster led chants referencing the Israeli Defence Forces. The set was livestreamed by the BBC, which later said the broadcast should have been cut. At the time, the BBC described the chants as “antisemitic sentiments” that were “utterly unacceptable” and confirmed it would review its guidance on live event broadcasts.
The Proceedings Against the BBC
The band firmly rejects that characterisation, drawing a clear distinction between criticism of the actions of a state’s armed forces and antisemitism. The latest action against the BBC extends the band’s legal response to media coverage of the Glastonbury performance into a second broadcaster and a second set of proceedings before the Irish courts.
Bob Vylan said:
“We have decided to take legal action against the BBC. In the immediate aftermath of our performance at Glastonbury 2025, The BBC wasted no time in placing labels upon us that did not, do not and never will fit.
These responses are unacceptable. So seeing the opportunity to remind them the power of the people that they are attempting to silence, we had no choice but to take on this fight. In fact, we take great pleasure in serving them that reminder in court.”
Why This Case Matters for Media Law
High-profile disputes like this one illustrate how quickly a live broadcast, a single news report, or a social media clip can escalate into cross-border litigation. When a broadcaster’s characterisation of someone’s words is disputed, the reputational and legal stakes rise fast particularly where multiple jurisdictions and multiple outlets are involved. Cases of this kind depend on early, careful legal advice: on what was actually said, how it was reported, and whether the reporting is capable of bearing a defamatory meaning. That is the kind of assessment experienced defamation solicitors are trained to make quickly and precisely.
