The Summerland disaster occurred when a fire spread through the Summerland leisure centre in Douglas on the Isle of Man on the night of 2nd August 1973. 50 people were killed and 80 seriously injured.
Phoenix Law has been instructed by a number of the families to submit an application to the Attorney General of the Isle of Man for a fresh inquest to be opened. Phoenix Law have been instructed in some of the largest and most important inquests in the UK & Ireland including the Ballymurphy Inquest in Belfast and the Stardust Inquests in Dublin. Both of which ended in the initial findings being quashed and the victims being vindicated.
The Summerhill disaster was adjudicated at the time as misadventure. Misadventure is defined by an accidental death which comes from a risk taken purposely. It has always been the families contention that this verdict is not correct and that the correct verdict would be unlawful killing, as was found in the Stardust Inquests.
